George Segal: An Intimate Portrait, Photographs by Donald Lokuta

Lokuta, professor of photography at Kean University in New Jersey and assistant to George Segal, creatively documented the artist for over twenty years.

Donald Lokuta is an artist, photographer, and professor who has taught for over thirty years, first at Ohio State University, and now at Kean University.  He has taught several thousand students the art of photography and is an experienced teacher, lecturer, writer, and photographer.  He earned a Ph.D. in 1975 and has been an exhibiting artist, represented in over 300 exhibitions from Europe to the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.  His work is in the collection of the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C., the International Center of Photography, New York City, and the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris, France.

Lokuta has been curator of several museum exhibitions dealing with the history of photography and has written many articles on the subject.  His interest in the history of art led to a long friendship with George Segal that began in 1984.  Since that date, the photographer worked with Segal on many projects.  He assisted George Segal in making every major sculpture since 1984 and he has been used as a model by Segal in many sculptures and drawings including the bronze sculpture, Depression Bread Line, 1991, at the F.D.R. Memorial in Washington, D.C.

Lokuta's photographs of George Segal have been used by the Museum of Modern Art in New York City and widely used in books published in Japan, Korea, Europe and the United States.

The exhibition George Segal (1924-2000): Selections from the George and Helen Segal Foundation Collection runs concurrently at the Zoellner Arts Center Main Gallery.
